- What is the operation of a cam fastening system?
- When constructing Ready to Assemble (RTA) furniture, you may come across a fastening mechanism that utilizes a Cam Lock and Cam Bolt.
- Although both are circular pieces that are placed into boards, the Cam Lock is screwed partially into a connecting board while the Cam Bolt is not.
- These two sections are designed to fit together, with the Cam Lock turning to tighten the fit.
How does a cam lock screw work?
When the end user puts the screw into the cam lock nut, the screw is driven straight, which reduces the point of interaction between the screw threads and the mushy particle board fibers even further.
How does a crankshaft rotate a cam?
The cam (in red) is rotated by a shaft (in gray) that is driven by a belt that is connected to the crankshaft of the engine (not shown). A rod called a tappet (blue) is pushed back and forth by the cam as it rotates. The tappet moves a rocker arm (green), which permits a poppet valve (orange) to move in and out in response to the pressure exerted by a spring (see illustration) (purple).
How do cameras work?
- Cams are found in a wide variety of equipment, ranging from door locks and prosthetic legs to old-fashioned (gear-driven) computers and photocopiers.
- They work their magic within a variety of machinery, converting rotation into back and forth motion.
- Finding excellent photographs of operating cameras is nearly impossible, but I’m on the lookout for examples on a regular basis, and I’ll upload new ones here as I come across them.
